Trend Focus: Wicker, Rattan, & Woven Goods

Rattan and wicker have been around forever and they have found their way into the spotlight. These natural materials work with a variety of tastes and styles, which is what I think I love most about them. They add this sense of texture and coziness to any home. It adds some interest and warmth with minimal styles. It works wonderful with colorful or neutral palettes. I’ve been inspired by images lately that I’ve seen with wicker and rattan from Cozy English Cottage Style to Simple Scandinavian.

wicker & rattan are here for the long haul.

What I love most is that as these materials have made their comeback they are now found at big and small retailers. Big box stores allow for this material to fit into homes at affordable price points, and the small retailers create items with extra uniqueness and bespokeness. I’ll dive into inspo, 5 ways you can pepper in these materials and my favorite retailers that keep on bringing new and fun items.

If you want to do some searching on your own, common terms you can search for are: “rattan,” “seagrass,” “wicker,” “bamboo,” or “woven,” to help establish this look. It so worth checking on places for vintage and second hand goods to find something super unique.

Inspo: Lighting

I am truly smitten over the rattan/woven trend that is happening with lighting. The most familiar type is basket pendants and chandeliers for a big natural statement. While I absolutely love the big and beautiful statement of a basket pendant, I want to shift the focus to other accent lighting options like wall sconces and lamps. Woven bases and shades alike are popping up as well.

Truthfully, rattan or natural texture lighting can be e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e. Basket pendants are the most affordable way to dabble with this lighting trend, but I’ve rounded up a few unique and different options. Big box stores like IKEA and Target alike often have pendant baskets. I think the good news is that as this trend continues to pop up, affordable options will keep being created. Great shops to check are Urban Outfitters and World Market. They are often known for focusing on trend items that have a natural feel.

Let’s look at how to get the look:

Inspo: Furniture

I love the natural texture and coziness that woven furniture adds to any space. It’s an immediate infusion of charm and character. I love that the textures can be used for almost any piece of furniture and any room in the home. Again, price points vary, but IKEA and other big box stores are great accessible options as well as second-hand vintage pieces. For more of an investment, retailers like Lulu and Georgia and Serena and Lily have beautiful options.

Inspo: Homeware

Think of this as small touches of relaxation and charm added to your daily routine. Glassware wrapped in cane and seagrass. Pretty woven laundry basket to store your goods waiting to be washed. Woven bottles for any beverages you want to contain and pretty organizers to contain your goodies.

Inspo: Storage

Woven baskets are an amazing storage solution to so many items. Toilet paper surplus in the bathroom? Basket. Toys that need to be concealed? Basket. Shoe storage? Basket. Blanket surplus? Basket. Books, magazines, miscellaneous items that have no home and need a home? A basket is an answer! I also love small baskets for corralling smaller items like jewelry, car keys, etc. There are so many options on the market- let’s take a look.

Inspo: Accents

Think of this as the additional textural bits that can be sprinkled in. A catch all dish for your jewelry, plants in baskets, placemats and candles wrapped and tucked in. I love that these subtle layers can add coziness and texture and most of the time these are the easiest and cheapest price points to add in these natural textures.

And I can’t wait to see what else gets released in this area. I love the coziness and charm that these unique natural materials offer. First up on my wishlist is lighting and more baskets. You can never have too many baskets, right?

Hugs,
