Home Crush: Josh Young Designs

Josh Young’s Chicago apartment is an absolute show stopper. It is a layered neutral paradise that oozes inspiration and soul. I don’t know when I first found Josh or his incredible work and designs, but his designs have left an imprint on me forever. Josh is an incredible artist, designer, and tastemaker. He has lived abroad in Milan and has collaborations with major brands like Nate Berkus Associates, Williams-Sonoma Home, Circa Lighting and CB2. His home is layered and soulful, bright and airy, while still being anchored with his collection of modern and vintage furniture. I urge you to follow his work and amazing eye for design.

Josh’s home strikes the balance of sophistication and elegance

while also still feeling layered and incredibly livable.

Josh’s apartment and his talented work has been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Elle Decor, Vogue Italia, GQ Italia, The Wallstreet Journal, Domino Magazine, MyDomaine, O, The Oprah Magazine, The Maryn and Apartment Therapy. Josh is a master of creating a symphony of neutral colors and textures. Everything feels so beautifully curated, while also feeling incredibly livable.

The neutral palette color scheme lends drama through texture and details. I absolutely love how each piece feels considered and special. Every room feels like it has multiple vignettes for creating special moments to sit down, rest, and feel inspired. Josh masterfully pairs modern pieces, like the dining table above, with vintage and curated antiques like the chairs.

Josh’s thoughtful layers feel uncluttered, thoughtful and collected. Like each piece is a valued possession that is being displayed. As a self-professed lamp lover, Josh has the best lighting collection around. One of my favorites is the glass lamp that rests on his mantle. He pairs sconces on the wall, with table and floor lamps. I can only imagine the coziness at night.

It is so important to note that Josh created interest and character and architecture in his rooms by creating faux fireplaces out of mantles placed atop marble slabs. In his living room he has filled it with books. His careful styling has made this piece feel natural and like it’s always been apart of the space. How cool is that?

Style Notes:

  • Neutral Color Scheme: Ivory, cream, white, black, gold, saffron and touches of blush

  • Art, Art, Art

  • Layer materials: books stacked on books, art layered in front of mirrors and other art, etc.

  • Vintage mixed with Modern

  • Multiple Lighting Sources

  • Brass and polished metals

  • Flowers

  • Bright white textiles and linens

  • Cream and ivory textiles and linens

  • Candles and candle sticks

  • Items displayed on all surfaces

  • Unique furniture

The bedroom is a beautiful mix of luxe touches with vintage anchors. I love how some of his art is carefully hung and others are leaning. It gives energy to the space feeling like at any moment I can be changed.
